First introduced in Wrath of the Lich King, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm expands on the tiered item level requirements when queuing for dungeons in the Dungeon Finder. As you level up and your gear improves, you will gain access to additional dungeons, heroic dungeons, and raid finder. Here's a list of all the item level tiers you'll be aiming to reach as you gear up in WoW Cataclysm's Dungeon Finder.
Many factions in World of Warcraft have a tabard that you can wear to gain additional reputation with that faction. If you enjoy running 5-man dungeons, wearing one of these tabards is a smart way to get to achieve exalted reputation as quickly as possible. The following is a simple guide to all of the factions that allow you to gain reputation with their tabard, and where to find their respective quartermasters.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm greatly revamped the 1-60 questing and dungeon experience, making it incredibly easy to access all of the classic dungeons and their respective quests while leveling. Later on, Outland and Northrend dungeon quests were also added to their respective dungeons. Completing dungeon quests is not only the easiest way to gear up your character, but it's also a great way to level up quickly!
Unlike in Wrath of the Lich King, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm now requires your character to obtain a minimum item level in order to queue up for the new Cataclysm dungeons. Upon release, the minimum item level was 272, but it was later dropped to 226. Any fresh level 80 will need to spend a little bit of time upgrading their gear before using Dungeon Finder for Cataclysm dungeons. Here's a breakdown of all the different ways you can raise your item level up to 226 after you ding 80.
In World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, Blizzard introduced Badges of Justice. For the first time, defeating bosses in heroic dungeons and raids would reward you badges that could be redeemed for epic gear. This instantly became a huge boon to raiders looking to fill gaps in their armor sets, as well as more casual players looking to obtain epic level gear without the committment of raiding. Wrath of the Lich King introduced several tiers of Emblems that served a similar purpose, but eventually this currency system was scrapped and replaced with two types of points: Justice Points and Valor Points.
While Cataclysm heroic dungeons aren't as frightening as they were when the expansion first came out, Cataclysm heroic dungeon bosses are still far less forgiving than their Wrath of the Lich King counterparts. The experience you gain from tanking regular Cataclysm dungeons will help prepare you for the heroic versions, but you'll also need a solid set of tanking gear. Here's a few things to keep in mind as you gear up your tank for heroic Cataclysm dungeons.
World of Warcraft's random dungeon finder tool makes it incredibly easy to find a dungeon group. Even if you're a damage dealing role, finding a dungeon using dungeon finder is still way faster than it was before this tool existed. One downside of running more dungeons is running into more ninja looters – people who roll on items that are not for their class or role either intentionally or unintentionally. Here's how to avoid being a ninja looter yourself!
Looking for a guild group to run dungeons and/or heroics? "Is anyone running heroics?" or alternatively, "Are there any guild runs going on?" are NOT the questions you should be asking! These are perhaps the dumbest questions constantly asked in guild chat, and I'll explain why.
Defeating 5-man dungeon bosses (both regular and heroic) with guild dungeon groups is a great way to boost your guild reputation and gain XP for your guild, which will speed up access to more guild perks. The first 7 dungeons that you complete in a level-appropriate guild group each week will also generate gold for your guild bank. If you're looking to run dungeons with as many guildies as possible, here are a few tips for getting a group started.
When your group wipes in a heroic WoW dungeon, often the first instinct is to look at your DPS meter and kick the guy who's doing the least damage. There is also a misconception that better gear makes a better player. While low DPS can be a problem, and better gear definitely gives you the potential to do more damage, usually the cause of a wipe has nothing to do with gear or DPS.
